 President's Message

As we enter the festive season, we look forward to the many wonderful events to come, but also look back at many of our efforts from earlier in the year.

I am very pleased with the continued efforts of our committee with respect to engaging our seniors and youth.  With leadership from all committee members, but specifically Sonia Kanani and Anup Ruperalia we have conducted a total four brand new events catering to these groups. We had a very successful Seniors Trip to Niagara Falls led by Anup, that was recently repeated with a similarly spectacular result. Well done Anup. Anup and Sonia worked together on launching a new initiative in our First Annual Lohana Family Day. It was wonderful success as we took several families out for a day at the ball park to watch a Blue Jays game.  Sonia also was successful in planning a wonderful Young Families event at Kin-R-Gee with close to 40 attendees.

Our LCF camp was once again a success with attendance up by over 25 percent. Many thanks to all the parents who were in attendance and a special thanks to our committee members Bimal Lakhani and Samir Chande for their efforts in making this a success.

Our Youth Committee has once again been very active thanks to the core team of Sahil Radia as President and Neha Mithia, Heer Shah and Sonia Ruparell on the committee. They have conducted several successful events this year and are definitely looking to have many new youths out for their bowling event on December 5th. I encourage all parents to contact Sahil and ensure that your children are able to attend.

Despite unfortunate weather, we had another wonderful picnic this year thanks to our perennial picnic organizer Jashwantbhai Saujani, many thanks again for your tireless work! The first annual Lohana Cup Soccer Tournament was also launched this year at the picnic and we look for the tournament to continue to grow and succeed under the leadership of Bimal Lakhani.

Our upcoming events are exciting to say the least.  Our annual Navratri Celebration is just around the corner, on October 11th at Applewood Heights. This year we have secured the sensational Shukla Brothers as our entertainment and we look forward to an incredible night.

Our Annual Chopda Poojan will be held at Sapphire Banquet hall on October 28th and thanks once again to the Lakhani brothers for their generous contribution of their facility for this event.

Lastly, our premier event, the Annual Diwali Dinner will be held this year at the prestigious Pearson Convention Center, featuring a wonderful line-up of entertainment and fantastic food. The ticket order form for this event is attached in this newsletter; we look forward to seeing you all there!

In the next week or so, we will be going live with our new Lohana website. This site will allow the community to provide any interested individuals with information and events that may be occurring. We will notify the whole community when this project is completed. Many thanks to Samir Chande and Rishi Suchak for their incredible work on this project.

I would like to close with a look to the future. When we made the transition to a largely new, younger committee there were certainly concerns amongst us about whether we would be able to pull this off. Thanks to the immense contributions of our past committee members, and the efforts of our community at large I think we have come through quite well. With the type of effort put forth by many of our community members, I have no doubt that the vibrancy and participation of our members will continue for years to come.

Thank you all for your support and see you at our Navratri Celebration on October 11th.

Sincere Regards,

Beju Lakhani

President, LCF

Annual Lohana Summer Picnic

August 10th, 2008

The annual Lohana Picnic was once again a success despite some very unusual circumstances. With both rainy weather and a large propane explosion shutting down the 401, we still drew a wonderful crowd of spirited participants.

Many thanks to Jashwantbhai Saujani and Sudhaben Saujani for their tireless efforts in ensuring that the food and chai were both hot and ready for our guests, and also for making arrangements with the park. The morning Gathia and Jalebi were very delicious.

Thanks to Deepakbhai Dhrona for once again supplying (and setting up) our volleyball net, and other game equipment.

Thank you to Bimal Lakhani for organizing the First Annual Lohana Cup soccer tournament. It was a great deal of fun for all and we look forward to an expanded tournament next year.

And lastly, a very special thanks to all of you who brought the wonderful food for our pot luck. We once again had a fantastic array of great food to choose from. See you all again next year!!

Rupal LakhaniCongratulations to the 2008 Miss India-Canada, Rupal Lakhani.

Rupal is a 22-year old student enrolled in her final year at the University of Toronto, pursuing a degree in Political Science. She dreams of breaking down the barriers for women in society, whom she believes still lack opportunities in a male dominant environment. She hopes to be a role model for South Asian women and prove that in today’s world anything is possible and nothing can stop us from striving to accomplish our goals. She plans to work alongside the United Nation’s one day.

Rupal is also one of the first internationally based dance instructors with the global dance movement – Shiamak’s Indo Jazz Dance Movement in Toronto. She was personally selected by her Guru - Bollywood superstar and dance pioneer, Shiamak Davar, to teach his unique style, and she is also a principal dancer in Shiamak’s Toronto Dance Team. Rupal Lakhani, also has a dream of making it to bollywood one day, as her passion for the Indian culture is rich. She explains, “I have a passion for dancing and feel the need to express myself in another form through different movements. I love getting to know others and dancing has opened up many windows of opportunity for me to meet new people and get to know them to another level. I would never give up this wonderful experience and continue to further enhance my communication skills.

Rupal Lakhani won the Miss India Canada pageant on July 26th, 2008. She competed against hundreds of other applicants but won the hearts of the judges and people through her beauty, intelligence and talent. This will be an excellent opportunity for Rupal to aim for her goals and dreams in life. Rupal lives by what Mahatma Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see."

Deep Mehta is the team captain for a charitable event called GuluWalk. GuluWalk is aimed at helping the children of war torn Northern Uganda. These children suffer daily in IDP (internal displaced person) camps. These camps were set up initially to be a safe haven where villagers could go if their village was under rebel control. Initially designed for a MUCH smaller occupancy, these camps now hold over 1.7 Million men, women and children. GuluWalk was initially started to help stop the "night commute". The night commute was a daily ritual that children would undertake to walk 5-8 miles every night into a near by city from their village. Here, they would sleep the night in alleys, doorways, etc under the protection of the Ugandan army. They made this trek every morning and every night to keep from being kidnapped by the rebel army and brainwashed into child soldiers, many times, being made to commit atrocities against their own village.

Unfortunately, a peace process that had been started fell through this passed spring and the violence and kidnapping continues as it has for 20 years.

If you would like to learn more about GuluWalk, please click here or if you would like to sponsor Deep online you may do so my clicking here.

Good luck Deep, the community is proud of you!
