Report on
Community Activities
Funeral Committee
It
has been a very sad start the year, with many members of our community
passing on.
Through
this sadness we have also witnessed one of the great strengths of our community
and that is our funeral committee and the work that they do.
Of
course, there is no way to prepare for such an occurrence, but the
funeral committee has always done their part to ensure that the
families are taken care of during their time of grief. As a committee
we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Kamleshbhai Thakrar, Sureshbhai
Thakrar, Kantibhai Raja,
Ashokbhai Thakrarand Vipinbhai Mithia for their tireless work in these times of
tragedy.
As a community we should be proud to have
these committed members who are always there to help in our times of
need.
LCF Post-Secondary Scholarship Fund
The
new scholarship fund has been launched with a $2500 award being issued to the selected candidate. The
award will be granted to the student with the best academic average
over the last two years of their high school careers. This award may be
used towards tuition of any post secondary institution.
We
are very pleased to be able to announce that funding for this project
has been secured for the next two years, with plans in the works to
expand this into a more fully featured scholarship fund that includes
needs based bursaries.
The
Scholarship Committee responsible for this project was chaired by Sona
Jethwa and consisted of Bimal Lakhani and Bella Karia.
We are also pleased to
announce that Government of Ontario MPP Charles Sousa will be verifying and signing off on the results
of the submissions this year, and will be in attendance at the Diwali
Dinner to present the award to the successful candidate.
Please
take some time to read through the attached document below and make
sure to contact us with any questions you may have regarding the
scholarship fund.
We’re
heading back to Blue Springs for another exciting edition of Lohana Camp!
This year, the camp will be held from August 7-9th. The
camper registration form can be found below in the upcoming events
section. We are also looking for energetic, responsible Lohana youth
the be counslors for this year’s camp. The counsellor application can
also be found in the upcoming events section below.
In
addition, we need to find adult
volunteers who would be willing have an exciting weekend away from
home to help make this camp run. The camp cannot run without you and we
would greatly appreciate your help. Interested volunteers can contact
Samir Chande (samirchande@hotmail.com)
or Bimal Lakhani (bimallakhani@hotmail.com)
for further details.
Please
see the camp video below to check out all the fun we had last year!
Hope everyone is doing great! Just as an update, I, Sahil Radia,
am staying on as President until September. The youth committee,
consisting of Neha Mithia, Heer Shah & Sonia Ruparell will also be
continuing until September. At the AGM, your youth committee put
forward a motion to change the Youth Term to run from September to
September, making it easier for the youth committee to coincide its
scheduling with school terms. Thus, I will continue to be
President until this coming September. If you would like to be on
the committee in any way, please do not hesitate to contact us at any
time. .
We are
currently scheduling many great events for you for the upcoming year.
Also, don’t forget that the Lohana Youth Camp
is running from August 7-9 at Blue Springs this year and we hope to see
you all there!
